The salary of the deputy city attorney shall be in such sum as the city council shall provide. The deputy attorney is authorized to carry out the functions and perform the duties of the office of the city attorney in the absence of the city attorney, and he or she shall perform such other duties as the laws of the state, the ordinances of the city and the orders of the city council shall require.
